SIARGAO, Philippines (ILO News) – Coconut farm workers and their families affected by Super Typhoon Rai (Odette) will benefit from cash for work and social protection coverage.

Through the Rebuilding better coconut economy project in partnership with the Government of Japan, communities have been identified in consultation with local governments in Siargao, specifically Del Carmen, San Isidro and Pilar.

The project organized the first interactive orientation on social protection coverage, which included the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) and the Social Security System (SSS).

Coconut farm workers and their families learn about membership benefits and services, under the project's cash for work programme. Local community associations gathered and validated information.

Community leaders verified the indigency status of the farm workers and their families in coordination with the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA).
