Decent work and responsible business practices in Thailand’s automotive manufacturing sector

This research study provides an in-depth analysis of Thailand's automotive manufacturing supply chain and its status vis-à-vis decent work and responsible business conduct, particularly in the evolving context of global requirements for human rights due diligence. Moreover, the study covers the identification and assessment of key forces and trends impacting the sector, while scrutinizing existing and anticipated challenges within the industry concerning decent work and responsible conduct.

This report provides a comprehensive analysis of the current situation of Thailand’s automotive manufacturing sector vis-à-vis decent work, particularly in the context of growing requirements for human rights due diligence and responsible business practices in global supply chains (including automotives). The report also examines key forces and trends shaping the sector, together with existing and foreseen gaps and barriers in achieving responsible business and decent work for all.

This study examines substantive elements of the ILO’s Decent Work Agenda, and brings with it significant implications for industry stakeholders in forging a brighter future of work and more inclusive and resilient supply chain in the industry going forward. Its findings underscore the profound need for broad-based improvements to labour compliance, equality and non-discrimination, and social dialogue and representation, among others.

The report also posits practical recommendations aimed at addressing both the aforementioned decent work deficits and other interconnected issues undermining industry success and sustainability. In so doing it hopes to provide a reference and guide for policymakers and key stakeholders to improve the industry’s ability to apply and uphold international labour standards, improve business practices, its reputation and competitiveness, and meet emerging human rights requirements in global supply chains.
