The first office of the ILO in Africa was established in 1959. In 1965 the ILO was the first UN agency to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the Organization for African Unity (OAU), now called the African Union.

Today, the ILO Regional Office for Africa coordinates the activities of the ILO's thirteen Decent Work Teams and Country Offices in the region with the primary goal of promoting decent work and social justice among its 54 Member States on the continent.
