What labour force survey data can tell us about the workforce in the health and social care sector

The present report describes the results of a special analysis of data from the Labour Force Surveys (LFS) of 56 countries which provided data about health and social care workers in sufficient detail to distinguish between different occupational groups within the workforce. The report covers analyses for 29 countries in Europe and 27 from other regions of the world.

Under the The Inter-agency Data Exchange Initiative (IADEX) of the ILO-OECD-WHO Working for Health Programme, the ILO conducted a special analysis of data from the Labour Force Surveys (LFS) of 56 countries which provided data about health and social care workers. The report focuses on topics for which LFS are acknowledged to be one of the most reliable data sources, such as workers’ demographic characteristics and working conditions. This analysis can help to highlight specific occupation groups and countries which are at heightened risk of decent work deficits and demographic imbalances.

It should be noted that the data featured in this analysis relate to the situation prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, and therefore do not reflect the impacts of the pandemic on the health workforce.
