As the world’s primary energy source, the oil and gas industry has shaped the global economy for centuries. In 2019, it employed 11.9 million people.

The ILO promotes the right to a safe and healthy working environment for all workers in the industry, with special attention to those in polar and subarctic climate zones of the northern hemisphere and those in Sub-Saharan Africa.

The ILO convened the technical meeting on the future of work in the oil and gas industry for its constituents to reach consensus on a defining challenge of our time: how to advance a just energy transition.
